One of the most tradition-based organizations in the country, the Boy Scouts of America (BSA), is getting into the innovation act. Today it announced, in partnership with product developer Edison Nation®, the BSA Innovation Challenge. This represents yet another opportunity for our children to put their imagination and creativity to work—and be rewarded for the fruits of their labor.
The goal of the Innovation Challenge is “to inspire young minds to submit creative, new product ideas,” the press release notes. These products may serve any goal, from household repair to animal care to learning in, or out of, school. Young people between the ages of 7 and 21 are eligible to participate.
“By partnering with the Boy Scouts of America for this Innovation Challenge, we are able to tap the talent and imagination of tomorrow’s leaders,” says Edison Nation® CEO Louis Foreman.
The list of prizes should certainly spur American kids to get involved. Edison Nation® has pledged up to $1 million to turn the selected submissions into real products. The young innovators will be entitled to lifetime royalties, and the designation of “inventor” on any patents—not to mention that they’ll get to appear on the TV series Everyday Edisons.

The competition’s broad submission guidelines will likely lead to all kinds of imaginative, unexpected ideas—which is just what such an initiative should do.
